White sand and golden tan welcome to miami - travel information

Modern-day Miami is the idyllic vacation destination for most Americans as it is a balanced blend of urban and tropical, a resort locale on one hand with all the big city trimmings of a booming economy on the other. Small cafes and art deco bars of Miami Beach exist alongside the megaclubs and skyrise hotels of Downtown’s Financial District. Somewhere in between, the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve provides exciting sea adventures for the whole family and the Port of Miami supplies access to the Florida Keys and the Bahamas by way of major cruise ship.

Cosmopolitan Chic: a Global Retreat

Finding airfare to Miami from any destination worldwide has become easy since Miami has positioned itself on the international map culturally, financially and demographically over the last few decades. Miami struggled with an influx of immigration from the Caribbean, Cuba and South America combined with a massive exodus of financial capital throughout most of the 20th century. Today, Miami has bounced back with full force, overflowing with the swankiest restaurants, premier nightlife, designer shopping and restored historic art deco hotels that glitter the oceanfront avenues of South Beach.

A walk along Collins Avenue in South Beach will reveal the charm of rehabilitated 1920s architecture, commingling with a Latin and European flair of sidewalk cafes, designer boutiques and the buzz of multiple languages afloat through the air. Farther north into main Miami Beach along Ocean Avenue offers the luxurious beach club hotels that Miami is famous for. These hotels offer panoramic ocean views, self-contained clubs and lounges and a pool with private access to the crashing ocean waves.

The dining in Miami is just as representative of its multicultural population. Do not miss a Cuban meal (or two) and the Argentinean special of flash-fried steak. Ask a local for the best authentic cooking and make sure to brush up on some Spanish ahead of time. Miami has also become the epicenter of sophisticated cuisine. Celebrity chefs Nobu Matsuhisa and Emeril Lagasse have opened restaurants in South Beach and the Blue Door inside the breathtaking Delano Hotel is also a notable standout. Make sure to have stone crabs at one of your meals, a local specialty!

Feeling the Salty Breeze of Miami

Aside from eating, drinking and otherwise resort and spa life, Miami has an endless array of activities for all levels of interest. Snorkeling and Scuba diving are the most common activities, along with boat and Jet Ski rentals from most major ports along the bay. Book a sunset ride at the Tropical Park Equestrian Center or rent a kayak to take a scenic tour of the majestic mansions the line the bay along the mainland.

It’s time to come see the dramatic beautification and restoration of Miami for yourself. Book your airfare to Miami now and reserve a few nights in one of the historic boutique art deco hotels along Collins Avenue to get the full South Beach experience.

Living in mexico sugar and spice but not always nice part 4

You and your business partner have been working your tails off trying to get a bunch of modern, Mexican-style duplexes off the ground. You've poured too much money to think about into hiring Mexican workers to build this duplex complex. You all have not only hired locals to do all the work, tolerating the cultural problems when Gringos and Mexicans work together, but in the end you will have an upscale duplex to offer as modern housing to the Mexican people.

One evening you two think you deserve a treat. You go to a restaurant in Guanajuato you've yet to patronize. You get there, you begin walking upstairs to the dining room where the Mexicans are sitting, only to be stopped by a waiter. The waiter tells you that the two of you have to sit downstairs near the kitchen. You ask why. He is hesitant to say another word and, in fact, doesn't.

You insist on being seated in the room where the Mexicans eat but your protestations fall on deaf ears and stiff necks. Screaming ensues. The screeching gets you nowhere at all.

As you begin to leave, another waiter who is more sympathetic to your plight confesses to you outside the establishment, away from the prying eyes and ears of everyone else, that the owner of the place hates Americans. The Americans, if they want to eat there, have to be segregated from the Mexicans.

The shocking part of this is that the gringos who live in Guanajuato's Gringolandia tell me I am making this up. They call it a fiction. They say that since they've not experienced it, it could not have happened. Yet, I was told this story from the two gringos to whom it happened. They are respectable retired professionals who would have no reason in the world to make up a story.

Isolated Event? Nope. Stay Tuned!

Exploring the galleries and museums of cancun

Though some people assume that Cancun is full of nothing but overpriced souvenirs, there are plenty of great values to be found. Some of the best bargains in Cancun – for both entertainment and distinctive souvenirs – are provided by the vibrant local art community. Art is everywhere you look in Cancun. Wherever you travel in the Hotel Zone or downtown Cancun, you will spot artists selling their work on busy street corners or in outdoor markets. Meanwhile, the galleries of Cancun represent both the best work of the region and internationally-recognized artists. Regardless of your budget, you will be able to find the right piece to add to your collection in Cancun.

One of the most popular places to view the fruits of creative labor is Cancun’s folk art museum, known locally as Museo de Arte Popular Mexicano. Located on the second floor of El Embarcadero Marina in Cancun’s Hotel Zone, the folk art museum showcases everything from traditional Mexican masks and costumes to religious artifacts and handmade toys. With nearly 15,000 square feet of exhibition space, the museum is able to tell many stories about both the local culture and the history of the Mexican people. Besides all of the artistic objects on display, the onsite gift shop is also a great place to shop for locally made oddities. Furthermore, the folk art museum provides a fun and affordable nighttime activity, remaining open to the public until at least 9 pm each day.

Some of the best places to shop for art in Cancun are the large shopping centers located throughout the Hotel Zone. The best selection of both commercial art galleries and individual vendors is at the sprawling Plaza Kukulcan. Known primarily for its number of upscale clothing and jewelry stores, Plaza Kukulcan is also a bustling art marketplace. In the common areas of the shopping center, local artists are allowed to display their work and sell directly to the public every day. On any given day, you will be able to find artists selling everything from handmade jewelry and crafts to pottery and oil paintings.

Plaza Kukulcan is also the place to find the work of renowned local artist Sergio Bustamante. Represented in Cancun by the Xaman-Ek Galleries, Bustamante’s uniquely surrealistic work is collected worldwide. Though he trained as an architect in Mexico, Bustamante has spent years combining his Chinese and Indian influences with the Mexican art tradition. The result is a body of sculpture and ceramics exhibiting a distinctive sense of humor, spiritually guided realism and superior workmanship. With additional locations at Plaza Caracol and La Isla, the Xaman-Ek Galleries also sell all types of locally-made products including jewelry, painting and folk art sculpture.

As you tour the galleries and museums of Cancun, you can also expect to see work inspired by the ancient Mayan culture. As the city is located amongst scores of ancient ruins in the heart of the Mayan Riviera, the imagery of the ancient civilization has always found its way into local museums and galleries. For souvenir hunters and art collectors, some of the most sought after items in Cancun are the expert reproductions of Mayan artwork. One such artist working in this style is painter and Mayan scholar Miguel Castro. Known for his masterful reproductions of Mayan paintings, Castro also uses traditional tools and methods to create his pieces.

Before venturing out in search of galleries and local artwork, check the local guides available at your hotel or resort. Besides offering descriptions of individual galleries and providing directions, many publications detail the most current exhibitions. If you are hoping to find a specific type of artwork at one of the outdoor markets, ask your concierge for suggestions; they often know where the best artists sell their products.

The accessory that many of traveller look for are travel bag and travel wallet. Travel wallet is the type that a bit different from ordinary type as travel wallet have more space and slots to contain all necessary things for travel such as credit card, passport, bank notes, check book, air tickets and all other important travel documents. The reason for having travel wallet is not only you have the one thing that store all kind of travel stuff in one place, but the other important reason is also to protect yourself when there is an accident such as you may lose your travel bag or suit case during flight transfer but you still have travel wallet with you. This enables you to make sure that you still have all important things that you need to continue your trip.

Why you need travel wallet?

There are so many reasons to have it apart from things that the detailed mentioned earlier. Especially you may need kind of money exchange when you have to travel. That is, when they have to travel, particularly overseas travel, many people likely you’ll buy traveller’s checks to take along for ready cash when you want to pay for goods or services outside of your own area, where personal checks won’t be accepted. Therefore it is good idea to keep those traveller’s check and credit cards with you all the time by put them in the travel wallet to protect you from losing those important documents.

Which format of travel wallet?

Some people may doubt that so if they would like to buy travel wallet, then which type of them they would use. Therefore you have alternative not to buy carry travel wallet but use money belt instead. The distinct benefit of using money belt apart from the convenience, it is very safe from pickpocket because the pocket is sealed by large zipper and the pocket is at the front so it is quite difficult to reach. Bagging the journey - what you-need-to-know about sleeping bags

Remember back in the day when you would tote your cool superhero sleeping bag around where ever you went? What comic book phenomenon was on yours? I simply had to have Spider Man. I was his biggest fan. My Spider Man sleeping bag went everywhere I did. I loved carrying it to the top of the stairs over and over. Then I would climb deep inside it and slide down the steps. But didn't we all do that? Okay, that may have just been me. What can I say. I was a rather strange child, but with a huge imagination. Regardless, we all have to confess that sleeping bags are the bomb.

When we are young they work as a second bed and a secure haven from anything wicked or scary. Then when we reach adulthood, they are more or less just camping supplies. But, could you ever get along without sleeping bags? Well probably not, especially if you enjoy camping.

Classic sleeping bags are just one of those accessories we can't live without. What kind are you snoozing in these days when you hit the trails for a weekend in the wilderness? Maybe you are still caught on those cartoon sleeping bags like back when you were a kid. Or maybe you are camping in sub-zero temperatures and require a mummy bag. You see, with sleeping bags you have to assess the environment. While some are constructed and designed for warm climates, others are built for frigid weather.

Now, just like with clothing, you wouldn't want to carry along the wrong sleeping bags on certain outings. This can result in frost bite or a sweaty night of tossing and turning. Always plan ahead before venturing out into the rough, and be sure to take along the proper camping supplies and sleeping bags.

Where do you shop for class sleeping bags? For a while I started to wonder if they even made them anymore. I was browsing through department stores and could not even find one. Then it clicked. I had to hit up the outdoor stores and sporting good suppliers for sleeping bags.

While I did come across a number of high-end and high-priced sleeping bags and camping equipment, I was not able to spot what I was searching for. I needed a fun, cartoon covered sleeping bag for my seven year old daughter. In the end I turned to the Internet for assistance, and found that this is the best place to shop for sleeping bags regardless of your preference. Hop online and check out the plethora.

Melbourne the cosmopolitan capital of australia

Ranked the world's most livable city along with Vancouver; Melbourne is a paradise for tourist all over the world, who flock here each year to experience everything this chameleon city has to offer.

As the capital of Australia's south-east state Victoria, Melbourne is often referred to the country's sporting and cultural centre. However this river side city has so much more to offer, including the latest fashion, a great variety of multicultural cuisine and a mix of modern and Victorian art.

Melbourne's trams, with their ornate Victorian designs are a symbol of the rich culture and art that is alive throughout the streets and alleys. The city celebrates a wide variety of annual cultural events, performing arts and architecture. The Art Centre shaped like a ballerina's tutu and lit up every night with thousands of different coloured lights, is the home of performing arts, hosting everything from the Australian Ballet Company, to various operas and plays. The adjacent National Gallery of Victoria continues this theme, running a mix of temporary and permanent exhibitions, with a large collection of both international and national works that explore every facet of the art world. However if the formal restraints of the high end of art and culture is not your thing, Melbourne is also considered to be Australia's live music capital, meaning you can go to any of the world class pubs and hear great live music from some of the city's most talented up and coming artists.

Like all Australians, sport is an institution in Melbourne. The jam packed sporting calender begins in January when the stars of international tennis compete in the grand slam Australia Open, where the atmosphere is magical and the weather is divine. The thrills continue at the Melbourne Cricket Ground or MCG, which hosts the very best in cricket during the summer and Australian rule football during the winter. As the home of the Australian football code, known as AFL, the MCG is mecca for lovers of football and cricket, with organized tours taking you inside the stadium's memorabilia filled halls and even onto the ground itself. Throughout the year you can also enjoy basketball, swimming, soccer and many other sports in Melbourne's specially designed sports precinct.

For lovers of couture and the latest fashion, Melbourne offers the best stores ranging from designer brands to vintage bargains. Melbourne Central, the cities largest shopping complex has over 300 stores sure to placate any shop-a-holic regardless of their personal style and budget. Whilst unlike the unique and modern architecture of Melbourne Central, the Queen Victoria Market is world famous for its great buys and earthy atmosphere. Here you get so much more than a shopping district, out in the open air the scene is vibrant and cosmopolitan, complete with performing buskers and a variety of produce and goods, making for a truly multicultural and unique affairs that has drawn tourists to this historic site for more than 125 years.

A truly diverse and multicultural city, dining in Melbourne is a treat with restaurants covering every nationality in the world. For fine dinning, Southgate is the place to be, offering unparalleled views of the splendid Yarra River and so many choices.

Enjoy a delicious meal at one of the award winning restaurants, a quick lunch at the less formal Riverside Food Court or a coffee and sweet at the numerous cafйs and bars.

In terms of multicultural restaurants the options are endless, try Italian food at the stylish Lygon Street, Carlton or Greek food in the very Mediterranean Russell street. But if you're looking for Chinese food, look no further than Melbourne's enchanting Chinatown. Brightly coloured Chinatown offers traditional laneway eateries that will transport you to lively streets of Beijing. More than just food Chinatown, serves up unique shops and stalls as well as Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian and Japanese restaurants that are sure to tantalize the tastebuds.

With so much to offer it is impossible to squeeze Melbourne into one short article. This sophisticated city may be less than 200 years old and constantly changing but its vibrant energy never fails to excite and enthrall tourists. Impossible not to love, Melbourne's bustling atmosphere of luscious parks, top restaurants, great shops and rich culture cannot be explained, it has to be experienced.

Caravan rental for more adventure

A lot of people enjoy traveling, but sometimes the hectic schedule of a lot of working people does not allow time for this, and because of this, they let go of their dreams to travel across the United States and just prefer to stay at home. Or, they choose one area, like Florida for example, and stay there for the week. But the longing to drive through the endless roads is still there. It will never go away. So, how can you make this dream come true without having to leave at least some of the comforts of home? The easy way is to look for caravan rental.

Hotels Versus Caravan Rental

When you go for caravan rental, you will pay for the whole caravan, not just a room. In hotels, you pay per room, and if you have three friends coming along, then it will mean that you each have to pay for your rooms. But if you opt for caravan rental, then you will be saving yourselves some money as one caravan trailer can have three rooms.

What you see in your hotel windows are what you are going to see for the rest of your stay. But if you opt for caravan rental, then the scenery outside your windows will depend on where you are currently located. Plus, caravan rental allows you to travel and see many places that simply getting a room in a hotel will not.

Visiting Commercial Camping Facilities

Caravan rental allows you to park in commercial parking parks where you can enjoy swimming pools and other facilities like laundry rooms and hot showers. There are also parking parks where you can have access to electricity hookups.

You can also choose among the three kinds of camping parks in the United States. You can go for a recreational camping site where you have the amenities you have at home. You have stores and laundry facilities. If you want a more adventurous camping site, then go for the primitive camping facilities, which can usually be found in national parks. There are even state parks and local parks that allow campers to stay. And if you want to be one with nature, then these national parks also offer you a great experience. You have to know though first if they have rules regarding campfires as some camping sites do not permit campers to build campfires. There are also national parks that require a small fee before letting you use their area.

Caravan Rental for the Senior Citizens

Senior citizens love to travel, especially if they have just retired from many years of working. They see themselves having a good time by traveling across the roads of United States and enjoying the different views. Because of this, there are caravan rental agencies that cater to senior citizens. These caravan rental agencies offer great prices that they will surely love. There are discount coupons and good deals that they only have to choose the agency wisely (as some will want to take advantage of them). There are discounts like 15% to 30% off for senior citizens as well as a day free if they go for a certain package. These caravan rentals can be as low as $20 for a day to as high as $45 per day, but this depends on the berth.

The bahamas a pirate fan s perfect travel destination

The Bahamas is a magical string of 700 islands in the middle of the Caribbean that has been a popular tourist destination for decades, says AMT American Express Travel. The Bahamas is a world-renowned travel destination with a rich history. In 1492, Christopher Columbus made his first landfall on the island of San Salvador in the eastern Bahamas. Columbus commented on the shallow water of the sea surrounding the islands, calling the water "baja mar". It is from these words that the name “Bahama” came. Since the Bahamas islands are located close to Florida they caught the attention of explorers, settlers, invaders and traders.

Pirate History in the Bahamas

One of the most interesting things about the Bahamas is its history with pirates. Black Beard, Calico Jack and Captain Henry Morgan himself were known visitors to the Bahamian islands. 1680 to 1730 was the golden age for Bahamian pirates. These islands made an ideal home base for pirates because of the numerous islands and islets. These were great places to hide their renegade ships and stolen treasure. The islands were also close to well-traveled trading routes, creating the perfect opportunity to plunder merchant ships.

The battles fought between pirates, merchants and other authorities often caused may casualties, especially ships. These ships often sank off the coast of the Bahamas, laden with gold, silver, and other antiquities. Spanish galleons were easy prey for pirates. These ships carried stolen riches from the native peoples of South and Central America. Pirates would hide this treasure in the numerous limestone caves dotting the Bahamas or bury it somewhere on the miles of beaches.

Rumors of treasure still hidden in the Bahamas exist today. Pirate William Catt is supposed to have buried loot on his namesake, Cat Island. Sir Henry Morgan, who preferred the island of Andros, is said to have buried treasure throughout the many islands. Where rumors may be false, the Bahamas certainly offers a mystique that encourages its visitors to indulge in opportunities for adventure and seclusion. American Express Vacations is beginning to offer special tours for travelers interested in highlighting famous pirate sites all over the islands of the Bahamas.

Modern Day Fun, Rest and Relaxation

The Bahamas of today is still full of adventure and excitement. The islands of the Bahamas are some of the most popular locations for travelers in the world. A big draw to most Caribbean tourists, the Bahamas cater to travelers on a moderate to high-end budget. American Express Travel offers a number of moderate and high-end accommodations that give the best value for your money. There are no accommodations such as hostels because the focus of the island is a luxury experience. But travel to the Bahamas is on most world traveler’s to see list.

Javea a coastal paradise

Xаbia, also known as Jбvea, is a coastal town overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in Marina Alta, a comarca in Alicante, Spain. The town itself is divided into three parts; the Old Quarter, the port and the village that is almost 3 km inland. Declared one of the healthiest climates in the world by the World Health Organization, Jбvea is protected by the cool harsh winds of the winter from the north by the mountain of Montgу. The temperatures stay pleasant enough even during the summer, averaging 32°c in the warmest month of August which is also one of the most active months in Jбvea in terms of tourist activity.

Fast becoming a popular tourist resort, the town of Jбvea has developed into a hot property market for retirement villas and land in general. The population of around 28,500 swells to over 100,000 when the tourists pour in. For the most part through, the inland groves of Jбvea are undisturbed by the tourist activities, they still produce tons of citrus oranges every year and the sight remains awesome when the branches are laden in season.

From a tourist point of view, the town is accessible through roads while the nearest train station at Gata de Gorgos is 10km inland. Connected to Alicante and Valencia through bus service as well, Jбvea is at an hours drive from the two airports. In addition, the coach service caters daily to travelers headed to and from Madrid.

Once a town fortified to ward off pirates and marauders, the ‘old quarter’ of Jбvea boasts the 14th Century Church of Sant Bartolomй that is dated a further 300 years back through some evidence. The church was declared a National Historic and Arts Monument for its historical value and is a popular tourist attraction now. While the ruins of the 15th Century Fontana Castle in the Arenal region have been replaced by apartment buildings, the cannons of the British destroyed fortification are still displayed in front of the Church of Sant Bartolomй. The Museo Historico y Etnografico Municipal J. B. Soler Blasco Javea, an etnographical museum, and the Agustinas Descalzas are also located in the old quarter, along with a modern market that, even with the span of time, retains the beauty of the olden days.

The port is an obvious tourist favorite with a gravel beach, marina and a wide variety of restaurants to keep holiday makers adequately entertained. As with most areas in Jбvea, there is a historical significance to everything. The port, dating back to the 15th century, played its extraordinary role in raisins export till the trade collapsed by the end of the 19th century. An attraction in the port area is the church of Nuestra Seсora del Loreto which shows off the town’s fishing culture to the hilt in its build. This area compliments the sandy beach of Arenal which is the party centre for the town. The various sand artists work away as while the tourists pour in, making it into a bustling place with bars, beach parties and long nights of fun and activity.

If all this isn’t enough to set Jбvea out as a town to visit, the 2,150 hectares of Montgу National Park add another mix of history and modern lifestyle to the area. The archeological remains dating several thousand years back, and the various pagan and Christian and cultural fiestas held in June, July and September make sure the time spent in this beautiful resort town worth your while.

Romantic Bed and Breakfasts

Bed and Breakfasts are a little different in Malaga and the surrounding areas than you might find in New England in the U. S. This description could be applied to hotels having as many as 150 rooms, but because a continental breakfast is included it earns that name. These hotels are more like hotels than the quaint inns furnished with antiques. However, they still have plenty of European charm and personal service.

Full-Service Conference Centres

Conference centres provide all of the business services needed to run a successful business meeting along with comfortable rooms and amenities. These tend to be higher on the price range scale but no expense is spared in service or upgrades. For example, the Avda Rio de Guadalmedina in Malaga is a four-star hotel with rooms ranging in the $220-$300 US per night range. It is new and modern and is close to all of the good restaurants and sights. You can just as the concierge for directions or to make your dinner reservations for you.

As you can easily see, choosing a Malaga hotel offers many different options at various prices. To decide which is right for your holiday, the only real question may be do you want to be closer to the golf course or the shopping plaza?

10 ways to fix spoiled family trips

1) Have a family meeting to decide where you will go. Try to pick a destination which offers something for everyone from Dad who only wants to lie in a hammock and drink something alcoholic while listening to the games of his favorite sports team; to the teenagers who want to be any where except where their parents are; to the toddlers who are more interested in the ground level attractions like insects and discarded chewing gum, than they are in any sort of scenery.

2) When you realize no such destination exists, draw straws. Shortest straw gets to spin the family globe while blindfolded and point to a destination. If it’s in the middle of an ocean, the nearest land mass will do.

3) No matter how unlikely the selected destination is, come together in a family spirit of “making the best of it.” Being a family, after all, means growing together as a family and a bit of planning will help overcome whatever challenges lie ahead.

4) If your fated destination decrees that you will be vacationing near relatives, insist on a visit to let the kids know where they came from. If the relatives happen to be considerably older, with a home full of treasured mementos from years gone by, even better. The toddlers will have plenty with which to entertain themselves, and the teens will have plenty to ask their elders about!

5) If your fated destination decrees that you all end up in a totally foreign part of the world, insist to the kids that it will be an educational experience they’ll treasure for the rest of their lives. That is sure to have them dizzy with anticipation as they throw themselves into the task of planning what to see and do.

6) Plan each day’s itinerary down to the second, because you don’t want the kids to miss a minute their once-in-a-lifetime vacation experience. To make sure they are enjoying themselves to the fullest, see that the family stays together at all times, and thoroughly discusses the importance of what they’ve learned each evening.

7) Teach the kids to be savvy travelers by packing a minimum of clothes which they can wash as needed the hotel bathroom sink, or if you’ve managed to track down those distant relatives, wait until you get to their house and ask your hostess to do a batch of laundry.

8) If your family trip requires you to travel by car, let Dad set the pace. When he announces that everyone had better eat hearty and do his or her personal business before leaving home, because there will be no food or relief stops, explain to the children that the real family fun won’t begin until you get to your destination. That’s why Dad is in such a hurry.

9) Leave the cell phones at home, so that the teenagers won’t spend all their time running up roaming charges talking to friends who aren’t sharing their horizon-broadening vacation. It should be no problem figuring out what to do if the hotel phone service gets shut off for climactic or political reasons.

10) If the only camera your family has is a camera cell phone, bring it along, but keep it out of sight by restricting yourself to shooting photos either when none of your family is looking, or when all of them are asleep. Catching them in their unguarded moments is sure to make them love you forever.

Luxury cruising 3 myths about cruises and why you shouldn t believe them

Cruising has become a top recreational choice for many people, however, if you are hesitating to take a cruise because of some common myths, then you are possibly missing out on a great vacation experience. Let’s go over each myth and see what the real deal is.

Only old people go on cruises

Several years ago, cruises were heavily populated with elderly people, since they always had plenty of time on their hands to take a leisurely cruise for weeks on end. Visions of old ladies with blue hair and countless shuffle board games are not appealing to the younger set.

These days, you’ll be happy to know, that most cruise passengers are younger people. The elderly only make up a small percentage of passengers. More people in their teens and 20s are also going on cruises. In fact, you might have a hard time keeping up with all the activities geared towards the younger set.

I’ll be forced to do everything on a set schedule

It used to be that all meals and activities stuck to a very rigid schedule. Breakfast at 9am, lunch at 12pm, dinner at 6pm, etc. This is mostly a thing of the past. While you’ll find that major meals are still served between certain times, there are a lot of eating alternatives where you can grab a bite to eat or sit down for a nice dinner, without eating in the main dining room.

Activities happen at all hours of the day, so if you want to sleep in, there will still be plenty for you to do when you wake up.

There’s not enough to do – I’ll be bored stiff

It used to be a well known fact that the entertainment on board a cruise ship was pretty pathetic: table tennis, card games, shuffleboard, and reading a good book was about the extent of the good times.

Now days, there are enough activities to keep even the most energetic person busy around the clock. Dancing, sports, games, physical exercise, swimming, shows, are just a few of the activities available on board the ship.

When the ship lands at an exciting destination, you’ll be on your way to having the time of your life, including site seeing and partaking of all the fun things you’ve planned to do while visiting new places and tourist attractions.

You see, there’s no reason to put off planning your very own cruise vacation right now. Today’s cruise ships are pretty much floating cities, with all of the attractions and accommodations that any well traveled city would have. In fact, it’ll probably take you 10 fun-packed cruises before you start getting bored. Now that’s a whole bunch of fun.

Moving to canada

There are plenty of sites offering information on how to apply for a Canadian Immigration Visa and many more offering services (paid of course) to help you do it. One of the major issues I had during the immigration process was the actual move itself and what happens when you arrive. I have received plenty of emails through my information website, onestopimmigration-canada. com, asking for additional help and advice about what forms are required, what to expect at the Canadian customs and what to do when they first arrive in Canada.

I won’t pretend this article will answer all questions for everybody, but I’ll be giving as much background as I can with more, detailed information backing it up from the website in the text or by links to the appropriate authority. I’ll start with one of the biggest headaches – the house sale (if you own) and packing up for the move.

Packing Up

When it comes to moving house there are several theories as when to put the house up for sale. Basically, we were told to wait until called for medicals as at least then you are over half way through the process. We were lucky in that we had somewhere to go, so we put the house on the market as we just wanted to have it sold and out of our hair! Even then, as "Our Story" shows, we had trouble. If you own your house you need to asses the local housing market and though its always a gamble, plan your house sale and know at what stage in the immigration process you will put it up for sale.

Everyone’s circumstances are different, but once the visa is issued, you only have 12 months from the date of your MEDICALS to physically land in Canada. One big worry I had was that we wouldn’t be able to sell the house quickly which in turn would delay our landing. If you miss the 12 month deadline, you will probably have to redo the medicals at a fair cost and then resubmit form there. Or you could land in Canada with your house unsold back in your native country with all the problems that entails. With many people’s houses being their main source of settling funds, you’ll need to have that money in the bank as soon as you can after landing.

If there is anyway you can find temporary accommodation then to have the house sold is one less headache you need when you are moving countries. You may pay rent for a while but at least you know what is in the bank when you arrive in Canada and this allows you to budget properly for your new life.

We used the whole exercise to get rid of all our old or unwanted things and start again. It comes down to economics if it costs more to insure, store and ship something than its worth. The decision on whether to insure or not is a personal choice and depends upon the value of the items you are shipping and don't forget to take into account any excess fees you have to pay in the event of damage or losses. You will need to build a list of all the items you are bringing into Canada and give their values in Canadian dollars.

This is probably easiest to take it from the inventory drawn up by the packing company – give as accurate assessment of value as you can but don’t spend weeks on it. If you have a box of kids toys for example – put your best guess at the value on the list as follows:

1. Box of assorted used kids toys C$100.00

2. Box of photographs No commercial value

3. Queen size bedC$850.00

And so on. You will be expected to have several copies of your packing list and a form B4 (Goods to follow) with it upon your arrival so make sure you have at least 3 copies in your hand luggage. Its ok to have too many but a pain if you don’t have enough!!

You will also need a similar list for any items you bring with you on the day of arrival and also any other subsequent shipments (we had an extra large box of things couriered in a totally separate shipment just before we left).

The chances are you will be using a specialist international moving company to move your possessions to Canada. Depending upon where you are moving from, you may have a long wait for your things to arrive at their final destination. You may also decide to store the property in your home country while you find the home of your dreams so make sure you allow for storage charges and extra insurance. These charges soon mount up and can give you a nasty surprise.

One thing I’ll say about the moving companies is that you are paying them for a service, if they are a good company they will be able to advise on the correct paperwork etc and formalities that will ensure a smooth arrival and customs clearance in Canada. You don’t need your shipment to be turned away from the port of entry (very expensive when they order its return to the original port of departure) or you end up liable for extra taxes etc. because of incorrect paperwork. You may well be able to have it repaid once you prove it is legitimate but you will still be out of pocket in the short term.

Most shipping agencies charge by the cubic foot and have several schemes offering different rates - "share a container" or "Full container". The Full container service will have the container packed and sealed at your residence. The shared container service will see your possessions packed at your residence and then transported to the companies’ depot. Once there it is packed with other items to complete a container.

Pets

As with everything, your circumstances depend on whether you'll bring any pets over with you. There are strict rules to be adhered to for the Importation Of Animals - as with most countries - so please ensure you fully understand what is required.

There are a few things to consider - if you are going into rented accommodation on your arrival having a pet will seriously restrict your choice of home. The local bylaws concerning pets are fairly strictly enforced leading to large fines if broken so make sure you understand them!

Make sure any inoculations are in date and you have the records. Also, it isn't cheap to transport animals so bear that in mind too. Its worth delaying the arrival of your pet if possible to give you time to settle in and complete all the arriving formalities with one less thing to worry about. After a long and stressful journey do you really need to stay at the airport for several hours while the vet inspects your pet and completes all the necessary paperwork? Then you have to organise the transport to your accommodation (if they take pets) with a stressed out animal!

At the end of the day, moving countries is enough of an upheaval without leaving the family pet behind. That was the case for us so we brought our 3 year old Golden Retriever "Boris" over about 2 weeks after us. Boris was in kennels for 2 weeks prior to his departure during which time he had a custom travel kennel made for him and time to get used to it. All the necessary paperwork and vets examinations were handled by the shipper and he was booked on a scheduled flight. On the day of the flight he wasn't put in the kennel until the last minute before loading which kept the time in the kennel restricted.

When we collected him all the paperwork was in order and all we had to do was go to the customs hall in the Calgary Terminal (pay a C$30.00 import duty) and then return to the cargo terminal with the release paperwork to collect one seriously excited dog!

Arrival Day

I guess it would be the worst nightmare if you landed without the correct documentation so hopefully we can help avoid that! It is essential that these items are carried in your HAND LUGGAGE and not packed away in a suitcase. All the Immigration processing takes place before you reclaim your baggage.

Your Canadian Immigrant visa and confirmation of Permanent Residence for each family member with you.

A valid Passport or other official travel document for each family member (normally must have a minimum of 6 months left before expiry).

Sufficient funds to cover your living expenses for 6 months.

Two copies of a detailed list of ALL the personal or Household items you are bringing with you. These lists must state how much the items are worth in Canadian Dollars.

Two copies of a list of items to follow - if you are shipping things later. Again, the values in Canadian Dollars must be shown.

For the goods to follow we used the insurance values we had stated to make it easier (as described above) and had made detailed lists of everything to come and in what shipment they were in. The Canadian Customs and Border Crossing Agency (CBSA) are responsible for enforcing the laws and provide the form B4 for personal effects accounting. You should receive a checklist and detailed instruction on what is required for your arrival in Canada when you receive your immigration visa’s I know when we had our visa's issued they were accompanied by a checklist of documents.

If you have any questions please contact your nearest High Commission or the CBSA BEFORE you leave your home country – one good tip is to ensure any important documents or transcripts are translated into English or French as required (if they aren’t already) before you arrive . For a more detailed overview go to our Customs and Immigration page.

It may be advisable to carry any other personal documents in your hand luggage as well. The Citizenship and Immigration Canada E-Book “A Newcomers Introduction to Canada” gives excellent advice on this matter.

As with most countries around the world, Canada takes its security extremely seriously and will not bend the rules for anybody. The guidelines are quite straight forward and to ensure a problem free arrival its imperative you stick to them. There are two main pamphlets available to assist you depending upon your circumstances.

RC4151 - Settling in Canada is the document to guide you if you are settling in Canada for the first time or after being abroad for over 3 years (For Canadians)

.

Also, for those who are moving to Canada to study or work temporarily the pamphlet RC4220 Entering Canada to Study or to Work will be your guide.

Ensure all your possessions you bring with you are listed with values in Canadian Dollar have two copies ready - one to keep and one for the officials. To speed things up when you land you can download and print the forms B4 and B4A from the CBSA website. It’s best to have all your lists typed out to make life easier for the officials. Also, you will need the same forms for the goods to follow (if any). No import tax or duties are payable on settlers personal and household effects as long as you have owned, possessed and used them prior to arrival in Canada. If possible try and find any receipts and/or registration documents to support this.

There is also a scheme for wedding gifts if you are newly married or about to be married within 3 months of your arrival in Canada. It is worth noting that any items you will be using for commercial purposes will be subject to regular duties at the current rates.

With the recent international clamp downs on terrorism and money laundering it is essential that if you physically carry on your person, over C$10,000 or foreign equivalent in cash, bonds or securities you report it to the customs official. There isn't any limit on settler’s funds but failure to follow the rules may result in the seizure of the cash and/or big fines. See the pamphlet RC 4321.

Good Luck!

Safety trip tips for travelers

Traveling can be a lot of fun. But especially in places foreign to you, there can be certain risks that might make your adventures unsafe. So here are some travel trip tips to help make your fun times safer.

1. Research before your go.

Search the Internet for travel advisories and the latest safety tips from state organizations and other top sites that turn up in your favorite search engines like:

travel. state. gov

cdc. gov/travel

state. gov/travelandbusiness

Check to see if there are any sickness reports, travelers’ alerts and other concerns you should be familiar with before leaving home. Then check maps, like at MapQuest. com, to make sure of your travel route and the best way to get there. A travel agency like AAA (Automobile Association of America) can help plan routes for you, checking road construction along the way and any detours.

2. Use the buddy system.

Try not to travel alone, when possible, so that you have a safe friend along and you can both keep an eye out for each other. If you do travel alone, leave your itinerary with a trusted family member or friend and have that person make sure you check in upon your return.

And when you travel, lock your vehicle and accommodations’ doors, stashing your valuables in the hotel or ship safe when you have the option to do so. Don’t leave cash lying around and remain accountable; i. e. don’t get so drunk that you don’t have control over your senses and environment.

3. Be prepared, like the Boy Scouts!

Plan ahead for emergencies and bring a light first aid kit, prescription medications for those traveling with you, and any over-the-counter items you may need like Pepto-Bismol, anti-diarrhea liquid or tablets, pain killer, anti-itch cream, sunscreen. It’s no fun to get something like diarrhea while you’re out in the jungle far away from any drugstore or convenience store. So plan and bring items you may need.

4. Check out your accommodations!

Ask for digital photos of your accommodations and the surrounding area, if possible, before your commit to staying in the place of choice. Because some places paint beautiful pictures of the area, then when you arrive, you may find you’re in the worst part of town in a dirty, roach-invested hole. So ask about the area, get travel brochures and check around. If there are no photos, if may be well worth an extra $10-20 per night to stay elsewhere – in a place that does have photos to show off the accommodations.

Themed travel destinations with family

If you are looking for fun theme family holidays this summer, you have many to choose from. When considering which holiday to take, you should find out what your family is interested in seeing. Do they want to go on an educational trip, an amusement park trip, a sightseeing trip in a scenic location, or a winter holiday? Once you discuss options with your family, you should begin planning your vacation. Most people plan family vacations a few months in advance because of hotel rooms, boat rentals, campgrounds, and other provisions may not be available when you want to go on vacation.

One of the most popular destination spots is Washington DC. This is a wonderfully historic city with many monuments, restaurants, museums, and other places for you to explore with your family. Take a tour on a bus or walk the different neighborhoods. Washington DC is a great place at any time of year. In addition to great historic buildings, there are plenty of art galleries, theaters, and coffee houses for your family to relax in. Children of all ages will enjoy seeing this city, especially at nighttime when the monuments are lit up. There are many tourists that enjoy taking pictures and buying trinkets from street vendors.

Another fun holiday you can take with your family includes a trip to Hershey Park, which is located in Hershey, Pennsylvania. You can visit Hershey on your way to Washington DC because it is only an hour or so away. Enjoy some good rides, chocolate treats, and buy some fun stuff.

Disneyworld is another good destination for families. This themed family holiday includes day passes or three-day passes that can be used during your stay. If you plan on visiting Florida, you should consider buying a pass that includes time in Disneyworld, universal studios, and Epcot Center. This will save you money and it can save you time. Instead of having to stand in line, you will be able to go into these parks and have a great time.

There are many wonderful hotels and resorts to stay in when you decide to vacation in or near Disneyworld. You can rent a car from the airport, enjoy free shuttle service if traveling to and from the airport, and be able to see the sights of Florida and visit some interesting amusement parks.

If you want to travel with your family during the winter, you should choose somewhere warm. Southern California has many small and large cities for you to visit. San Diego, Los Angeles, and other areas are home to amusement parks, state parks, and the ocean. Your family will have a good time being in the warm weather while on vacation.

A themed vacation is one that your family will remember for a long time. Theme vacations are easy to research and should be arranged in advance so you will not have to worry about finding hotel rooms, rental cars, or other accommodations.

An old fashioned caribbean inn on bequia in st vincent and the grenadines

Old fashioned Caribbean accommodation is becoming rare, the Caribbean Inn or Guesthouse has not vanished entirely it isn’t often you will find one as charming as Julie and Isola’s Guest house on Bequia in the Grenadines.

Julie’s Guest House is in actual point of fact two guesthouses, one behind the other, and it is situated not far from the ferry landing pier in Port Elizabeth on Bequia., almost just across the road.

Typically Caribbean accommodation is simple, and perfect for the traveller who wants to visit the Caribbean, but doesn’t have much money to spend, but wants to experience the old fashioned holidaymaker’s lifestyle as opposed to the five star resort comforts and the life in a bubble that you get there.

Julie and Isola’s Guesthouse does exactly that. The accommodation is Caribbean, simple, clean and family run, in this case by the McIntoshes. who do a brilliant job from their own special rum punches to what is possibly the best kitchen on Bequia.

To stay at Julie’s which by the way is very famous throughout the Grenadines will cost $39 for a double with no meals, $54 if you include breakfast, and $78 including dinner, all figures in US$.

The meals are delicious and famous Caribbean fare, and at dinner the menu is different each night, with the emphasis definitely on seafood. It is of course very fresh indeed, and Julie makes soups to die for.

Of the two guesthouses the one nearer the road is more modern, and roomy but noisy, so if you want the real Caribbean experience then stay in the older second guesthouse. The wooden verandah is just old Caribbean and whilst open and not in the least private does encourage conversation between fellow guests, and you will find much in common with the people who chooses this kind of old fashioned Caribbean Inn. It has to be said the walls are fairly thin in this second guesthouse, honeymooners be warned!!

The real charm of Julie’s guesthouse is the kindness, care and consideration, all honestly given, and are without equal anywhere in the world. This is a real belong to the family feel place that Julie and Isola have successfully run for over 25 years. The give out a huge amount of love at their Guesthouse on Bequia, and get loads back with many many people who can afford to, but won’t stay anywhere else.

One of the great things about Julie’s Guesthouse is its central position, convenient for the dollar buses and taxis which you will need to get yourself to Lower Bay and Friendship Bay. Take the bus because that means you travel with the local people, so you will travel to the sounds musical of the Caribbean.

Lower Bay is a great beach with a couple of restaurants/bars, and never too crowded.

Julie and Isola’s Guest House on Bequia in the Grenadines is true Caribbean accommodation at its very best, where you will be treated in a way you thought only your mother could, so because of this it is a real home from home. So if you wish to visit Bequia, then don’t even contemplate staying anywhere else.

Tips for traveling with young kids

Are you taking a vacation with a baby or toddler and worried that it will be a hassle? Well, you’re right to worry but with a few tips and suggestions, your family vacation will be enjoyable for you and your young ones.

If you’re planning on traveling by yourself with your child then consider asking for help from a friend or family member. The added cost of their company will more than pay for itself with the assistance that they’ll provide.

If you’ll be traveling by car then try not to drive extended distances without stops. Plan rest stops about every two hours and consider staying the night at a midway point to give you and your baby a rest from the road.

Travel by plane can also take its toll on adults and kids. Get your seats booked in advance and if possible, get a bulkhead seat. These seats have a wall in front of them and offer a bit of room for your child to move around. Airlines generally will let you pre-board with infants so you can get settled in your seats before the other passengers board. If air travel is more than a few hours then consider stopping off at a midway point along the way. Not only will it give you and your family a rest but you can take a day or two to discover an interesting destination.

If you’re traveling with a young baby then make sure you bring plenty of the diaper changing essentials and bottles of formula or baby food. Regardless of age, pack things to keep children busy. If they’re young, bring rattles and teething rings. If they’re older then bring a new toy since old ones won’t keep them occupied for too long. Consider purchasing a portable DVD player so they can be kept busy watching their favorite program or cartoon. There are also children’s books that are accompanied by CD’s so your child can listen and read at the same time; not only will it keep them busy but it will also be educational. Coloring books sound like a good idea but coloring can be too much of a temptation to draw on tray tables and seats.

Bring snacks since children often get hungry and thirsty and they tend to be finicky eaters. Don’t pack messy snacks and try to find food with low sugar. Pack lots of baby wipes; they come in handy for cleaning up messy faces and small spills.

Holidays with babies and toddlers don’t have to be nightmares. With some preparation, planning some rests along the way and keeping them busy, you and your family can have an enjoyable vacation.

The katavi national park in westerntanzania

In recent years the Serengeti had 100,000 visitors; in contrast the Katavi National Park in the remote and inaccessible west of Tanzania had only 383 people through the Park Gates. It is rumored that when a guest arrives at the park gates the wardens there are shocked and bewildered, so rare are tourists to this park. Here, in this park the only other people you will meet are other guests and the staff at the one [tented] lodge in the entire park. Here you have one million hectares to yourself.

I am sure you have heard and read many times about destinations being ‘off the beaten track’ - this park is the personification of overused term ‘well off the beaten track’. That is for the moment; with the tourists insatiable appetite for something new, somewhere not frequented by other tourists, in this ever shrinking world, one wonders how long this park will remain remote and secret.

The thing that helps keep this park a hidden jewel is the remoteness of the park. To drive to this park is an endurance test in the extreme. Departing from Aruhsa, or Dar es Salaam, involves a three to five day, spine breaking and brave drive in a robust 4 x 4. Alternatively to hire a charter flight is an easier option, if not equally more expensive. I say easier but this also involves a four hour flight in a light aircraft, with a refueling stop en-route.

If you dive with the intention to camp, you must be totally self sufficient. You will be driving into the true wilderness. When you think of campsite, think of a cleared piece of ground for the pitching of tents. Here you will be truly alone with nature. It is well worth the effort if you are up to the adventure.

The park is truly magnificent, covering over one million hectares of land. There are two lakes, Lake Katavi in the north and Lake Chada and the Katuma River in the south. Diverse woodland and acacia bush in the park is home to elephant and many types of antelope. The game here is said to be unrivaled in the rest of Africa, this park offering an exceptional opportunity to see Africa as it once was. Reputedly there are herds of buffalo in access of three/four thousand animals. The park is mostly high plains grassland - grassland in the dry season, and swampy wetland in the wet season. The best time to visit is in the dry season - June to October.

In the dry season all the animals in this park congregate around the lakes and along the river. Huge crocodiles line the rivers and share the lakes with a solid mass of hippo. If you like hippo this park is the place to see them en-mass. Some of the pools and the centre of Lake Chada can have three thousand hippo at any one time. There are also leopard and many lions in this park. The buffalo being the preferred meal for a lion means there are no shortages of lion in this park.

There are over four hundred species of birds, including - Angolan Pitta, Blackfaced Barbet and the Blue Swallow. A highlight of viewing the birds is to watch the Maribou Stork wading in the mud and feeding on the barbel [cat fish]. At times the mud boils with these fish and the storks causally extract them form the soft mud for a quick and easy meal.

If you get the chance visit this park before more lodges open and the remoteness and matchless beauty are lost to the tourism industry.
